As someone who has worked in eCommerce and digital marketing for over 10+ years, I have to stay this is one of the best written and researched posts I have seen on this topic.. period! Very well done. Subscription well earned.
I'm with you, SEO is shifting to GEO. Those who are waiting are going to be rushing to catch up when we see a seismic shift as Google moves from keyword-centric search to AI Mode. But, I also see that GEO best practices appear to be best practices for human-to-human connection and still support classic SEO.
The shift I'm thinking about is how we transition from looking at website traffic as an indicator of success, when it's actually brand visibility in search that will end up being a key to success.
I don't think SEO is dead. It is changing, and one of the changes is the ability to be displayed in the results of generative engines.
You've mentioned the ranking factor of LLMs' source authority. Where do you think the source authority comes from? It's the same as always: backlinks and mentions across the web.
Cool content, but I don't see a definition for SEO/GEO anywhere in your content, so you rely on people already knowing what both mean (especially GEO, which is the newer term). I'd suggest adding it somewhere (probably at the beginning) :)
Yeah that's a good point. I originally had the title as "Search Is Dead. Long Live LLMs." I guess I lost semantic meaning in my post-hoc edit. Thanks for the note!

what are you finding working wrt indicator/KPI shifts?
Nothing yet. The education is enough right now.
SEO is not dead, it’s alive and kicking like ever before.
.
If you think it is dead then maybe your on-page is somewhat troublesome.
.
If you had an interesting idea, designed a layout and sent the page for indexing, what do you expect to see from Google’s spiders?
.
Just indexing (fingers crossed).
.
What are ranking in Google search results?
.
No, that takes time.
.
Well I can do both, indexing and ranking as soon as the page is indexed within just a few short hours.
.
Can GEO/AI/ChatGPT replicate the same?
.
No chance
